Folding Box Board (FBB) Paperboards
Folding Box Board (FBB) is a type of paperboard that is specifically designed for folding cartons and packaging applications. It is a multi-layered material consisting of multiple plies or layers of paperboard. FBB typically has a bleached white top layer or coating, which provides a smooth and printable surface for high-quality graphics and branding.
Folding box board is known for its excellent folding properties, stiffness, and durability, making it suitablefor various packaging requirements. It offers good resistance to tearing, moisture, and bending, ensuring that the packaged products are well-protected. FBB paper board is commonly used for packaging items like pharmaceuticals, confectionery, electronics, and other consumer goods.
The specific characteristics and composition of FBB board are that there are three layers of pulp, wherein the top and bottom layer would be bleached chemical pulp while the middle layer is made up of mechanical pulp.
Mechanical pulp is produced by mechanically grinding or refining wood fibers to separate them from the lignin and other impurities. This process involves grinding the wood chips or logs in a mechanical pulping machine, which breaks down the fibers and produces a fibrous pulp. Mechanical pulp has a higher yield compared to other pulping methods, such as chemical pulping, but having lower strength, due to which mechanical pulp is often used in combination with other types of pulp, such as chemical pulp or recycled fibers, to improve the overall properties of the paperboard. This blending allows for the enhancement of strength, smoothness, and printability while maintaining cost-effectiveness.

While FBB paperboard is a multi layered board with bleached chemical pulp on the top and bottom layers and bleached mechanical pulp in the centre layer; SBS paperboard is made up of 3 layers of bleached chemical pulp. This leads to a functional as well as aesthetic difference in the two types of paperboards.
